Engage parents with the Characteristics of Effective Learning

Support parents to understand the importance of how children learn, as well as what they are learning, by promoting the Characteristics of Effective Learning (CofEL).

You can do this in several ways:

•      Create a CofEL information board using sequences of photos of the children engaged in learning, showing the process of their learning and not just the product

•     Talk to parents about the CofEL at Key Person meetings and focus on developing the CofEL and not just the Early Years Outcomes. Give them practical ideas of how to support their child at home e.g. by providing open-ended found and natural resources

•      When you share observations focus on ‘how’ the child is learning not just the ‘what’.  Ask them to watch out for CofEL at home

•      Run a parent workshop with lots of practical opportunities for the parents to ‘try out’ open-ended activities, link these to the CofEL.
